Critical Reading on the SAT / PSAT

The section on Critical Reading tests students through both sentence completion questions and reading comprehension. A large part of this section deals with vocabulary. Very difficult words appear throughout this part of the test, making it imperative that students possess a strong vocabulary. We have found that raising scores in this area presents the greatest challenge merely because students often do not have the necessary vocabulary to do well on the test. For that reason, we put a strong emphasis on learning the words commonly found on the SAT/PSAT, words which we have identified.

The Critical Reading materials give tips and strategies for answering the types of questions found in the sentence completion problems and the reading passages. They also methodically help students to build the vocabulary required for answering the test questions correctly.

Each word is presented with the information shown below.

 

Definitions

The definitions given on the vocabulary list are the ones that have been tested on previous SAT/PSAT tests. Students do not spend time learning definitions that are not likely to appear on the test.

 

Synonyms

The synonyms of many words are included because we have found that the test writers frequently will use a synonym of a word that has been used on a previous test.

 

Derivatives

The vocabulary list includes derivatives of each word in order to expose students to various forms of the word which might not be readily recognizable should they appear on the test.

 

Sentences

Each word on the list will be used in a sentence so that students can see how it is commonly used.

 

                                                                                                          

    TESTS

                           To give students practice with these words, we have 60 vocabulary lessons with four different formats for testing:

                                                                                                        multiple choice

                                                  reading comprehension passages (with vocabulary words included in passages)
