Getting students prepared for the reading section of the SAT and PSAT is a daunting task, mainly because of the challenging vocabulary on the test. For the purpose of helping teachers prepare their students, we have designed a vocabulary program that is to be used with novels that teachers teach in their classrooms. From these novels we pull out the words that have appeared on past SAT and PSAT tests and build a vocabulary study around them. This is a great way to teach the students the vocabulary they will be expected to know when they take their college entrance exams, and it is a great way to help students better understand the novels they are reading, as they will have the difficult words in hand, already defined for them.

• These vocabulary studies give the definitions which are used by the College Board on their tests, along with synonyms (many of which are themselves on SAT tests), derivatives of the words, and a sentence using the word in context.

• The tests in these materials use various formats including matching, multiple choice, and sentence completion (the format used by the College Board).

• One important feature of this vocabulary study is that the tests are over the words as they appear in the novel. This gives the teacher the ability to give tests which pertain to the assigned reading at hand.  The teachers can then capitalize on the immediacy of learning the words in particular chapters. However, if the teacher has need of an alphabetical listing of the words with definitions, that is also included in the set.
